Daniel Zaretsky
Daniel Zaretsky is a global professional who has many years experience living abroad and working in and around the private, government and NGO sectors. Currently, Mr. Zaretsky is based both in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and his native USA and is the Co-Founder of Adjacent Possibilities, Adjacent Power, Illumata University and of the World Influencers Network. Mr. Zaretsky was part of the team that wrote the plan for what became the Ministry of Innovative Development in Uzbekistan, and Adjacent Possibilities, builds on that experience by working privately with a young team of Uzbekistanis on innovation projects to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Adjacent Power is one of the first projects of Adjacent Possibilities and the company is introducing the pay-as-you go solar model to Uzbekistan, while looking to localize the production of solar panels in Uzbekistan itself. Illumata University is our flagship project and is a plan to bring an affordable, primarily online university to Uzbekistan. The university will have a main campus in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and the fourth largest city in the former Soviet Union by population after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev. Illumata plans to eventually have mini-campuses around Uzbekistan and these mini-campuses will function as test/study/tutoring centers as well as makerspaces/incubators and co-working spaces. The World Influencers Network (WIN) is a global network of 1,000+ influencers from around the world. WIN ran the first-ever World Influencers Congress (WIC) in Uzbekistan in 2019 where almost 100 influencers from nearly 40 countries came to Uzbekistan to create content to promote tourism. The results were seen on various social media by more than a billion viewers. In Tajikistan, Mr. Zaretsky was a Member of the Board of Directors of AmCham Tajikistan, the American Chamber of Commerce, where he was involved with international trade and investment issues and where he also sat on the Secretariat of the Extractive Resources Transparency Initiative (EITI) Tajikistan (AmChams exist in approximately 100 countries and EITI works in approximately 40 countries). Mr. Zaretsky is also Founder and Country Host of Global Entrepreneurship Week Tajikistan (GEW). GEW takes place in 180 countries and is a celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. GEW’s 2014 Campaign was nominated for the Best Rookie Country award by the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN). In addition, Mr. Zaretsky is also a Country Pricing Analyst for Mercer, the world’s largest human resources consulting company. Previously, Mr. Zaretsky received his BA in Anthropology from the University of Michigan and his MBA and MIA (Master of International Affairs) degrees from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business and SIPA (School of International and Public Affairs), respectively. At SIPA, he specialized in Eurasia at the Harriman Institute. Mr. Zaretsky also has a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from SIT (School of International Training). In addition, Mr. Zaretsky has been employed in city government as a Project Planner at the New York City Mayor’s Office of Operations and in administration at Indiana University where he managed large grants. He has also taught at Bronx Community College. In the 1990s, he twice worked in Kyrgyzstan, the first time, teaching English and assisting the USAID Mass Privatization project, and the second time, interning for a fund that invested in small- and medium-sized businesses. Mr. Zaretsky speaks Russian and Persian/Dari/Tajik and has basic knowledge of the Turkic languages, particularly Uzbek and Turkish. He is passionate about bringing new products and services to new markets, regional trade, international entrepreneurship, the SDGs, the New Silk Road and connecting people across cultures.
